The history of AUOPS began in Ojai, California in 1990 through a vision inspired by peace education, global understanding and human development. This early foundation was influenced by the work of Dr Robert Muller, former United Nations Assistant Secretary-General, whose ideas connected education with peace, human rights and responsible citizenship. This stage established the core academic direction of AUOPS. Education was viewed as a tool for developing the whole person, not only for career preparation, but also for character, leadership and service.
In 2002, the American University of Peace Studies Inc. developed as a higher learning and research institution. Its academic purpose focused on peace studies, life skills education, behavioural science, leadership and human well-being. This period strengthened the university’s commitment to research-based learning. AUOPS began building an academic model that connected theory, human behaviour and practical knowledge to help students understand complex personal, social and professional issues.
By 2024, AUOPS placed stronger emphasis on research, strategic thinking and evidence-based academic development. This stage reflected a wider commitment to using research to examine modern challenges in society, education, mental health, leadership and human development. Research became a central part of the institution’s identity. The university continued to position itself as an academic environment where students and professionals could develop critical thinking, analyse real-world issues and contribute to informed decision-making.
In 2026, AUOPS USA Inc. represents the next stage of the institution’s academic direction. The university is focused on research-based degree programmes, advanced study and scholarly development.
Its purpose is to provide structured degree education supported by research, academic quality and student development. Through this direction, AUOPS USA Inc. prepares students to think critically, conduct meaningful research and contribute knowledge in peace studies, psychology, leadership and human development.
